Hmm, we have one DIY kit for making a magnetic crane using electromagnet (http://www.projectsforschool.com/product/magnetic-crane/); and a how to make guide for the same as well (http://www.projectsforschool.com/product/making-magnetic-crane/).
But if we want to make a magnetic crane with out using electromagnet, then we can replace the electromagnet with a simple magnet. You need to make the frame for the crane using wood / plastic. Then instead of electromagnet, you can use a simple magnet to lift and move, and manually drop the iron / steel objects. Electromagnet provides the option to drop the objects remotely by switching off the current.
A crude model of magnetic crane can certainly be made using a simple magnet. Readers views, suggestions and comments are welcome.
