If you have a young, vibrant, growing 10 and 11 years old like mine, you’re most likely frustrated with the way they dissect their toys mercilessly. So here we give some Tips to generate interest in your kids towards studying They are curious and inquisitive but find structured curriculum based textual study a challenge. Science is too textual and too many diagrams but too less fun; Mathematics is frustrating. And we parents? We wonder!
It’s not like they do not enjoy the applications of science, it’s just that the theory doesn’t sit well with them; leaving us parents at a loss of what to do to spark that interest. Here are a few ideas I found helpful enough to share with you, because as parents the least we can do is to make studying fun for them.
Botany and Agriculture:
Your kitchen and your kitchen garden are awesome tools to get very young kids interested in botany. The plants, their leaves, their colors, the patterns are all methods to keep them intrigued enough when they need to read about the structure of a flower. Let them identify which part of a plant they are eating through their salads.
Similarly, your kitchen and fridge can educate young ones into which condiments are roots, which herbs are crushed leaves, which pulses and grains are staple to which area (Remember the crops of India in Geography? ) I wish someone had asked me to stick rice and pulses on the map to indicate locations rather than their names!
On weekends a visit to the nearby nursery, or farm or a garden in the least will enhance the education manifold without making it look like study.
Chemistry:
Again kitchen and bathroom are going to be handy. Kitchen is full of harmless chemicals. Acids, bases, turmeric powder with soaps, yeast, soaps, detergents and much more is available to discuss organic and biochemistry. You can use salad pieces to organize bond structures.
Label your bottles of salt as NaCl and sugar as Fructose and see if you don’t pique their curiosity enough.
Physics:
Now this one is slightly complicated. While it may be OK to demonstrate mechanics using simple balls, pivots, and other toys; it is not easy to take chances like opening up a lamp to show how it works. And that’s where expert and external help comes into picture. There are some experiments happening in the education industry to solve the challenges in science education for kids.
Organizations like Projectsforschool create simple, knock down, fun DIY (Do it yourself) kits for parents to let their young ones experiment with physics concepts like electricity, magnetism.
Maths:
While a lot of Mathematics is abstract, you can teach them addition and subtraction using toffees, coins, currency. You can teach fractions using cakes and desserts. Cardboard boxes can be used to teach area basic concepts of volume and area. Profit and loss can be taught while shopping and probability using dices when playing ludo.It is also an great Tips to generate interest in your kids towards studying maths.
